Leh was the historical capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh and now is the joint capital and largest town of the union territory of Ladakh in India, located in the Leh district at an altitude of 3,524 meters (11,562 ft), and is connected via 434 km (Srinagar-Leh ) National Highway 1 to Srinagar in the southwest and 473 km (Leh-Manali Highway) to Manali in the south. Although the access roads from Srinagar and Manali are often blocked by snow in winter, the local roads in the Indus Valley usually remain open due to the low level of precipitation and snowfall.

If you still plan to travel by train the closest railroad station, for now, is Jammu Tawi (700 km from Ladakh) you can take a taxi or rental car/bikes to reach Ladakh from there.
