Angkor Wat also is known as the "city of temples" is the largest religious monument in the world, measuring up to 162.6 hectares in Angkor, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Built by the King of Khmer Suryavarman in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum.
Angkor wat was Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the Lord Vishnu by the Khmer Empire but was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.
According to Hindu mythology, Angkor Wat represents Mount Meru, home of the devas. A myth, linked to the construction of Angkor Wat is described as the temple was ordered by the Hindu deva "Indra" to serve as a palace for his son Precha Ket Mealea. According to the 13th-century Chinese traveler Zhou Daguan, some believed that the temple was constructed in a single night by a divine architect.
The ancient Angkor wat temple is an amazing impression of classical Khmer architecture style and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, although its original name is unknown, as per the historians it may have been known as "Varah Vishnu-Lok" or Parama Viṣṇulok. The temple has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for the visitors.
The extensive damage and deterioration faced by Angkor Wat Along with many other ancient temples in Cambodia are a combination of plant overgrowth, fungi, ground movements, war damage, and theft.
The war damage to Angkor Wat's temples however has been very limited, compared to the rest of Cambodia's temple that was ruined during world war. Also, the Angkor Wat received the most attentive restoration began with the establishment of the Conservation d'Angkor (Angkor Conservancy) by the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in 1908.
Other than being the largest religious historic monument in the world the Angkor Wat stands tall with its amazing classic style of Khmer architecture and structure capability, the ancient sculpture of the place defines it's detailing astonishingly and the landscape that surrounds the temple describes it differently from the others. It is an interesting place to travel and explore along with the touch of myths, history, religion, and beautiful landscapes.
